The iPad is an important tool that MCDS has issued to you in order to support and enhance your learning and creativity. Our hope is that the iPad will allow you to create content in new ways. In order to be the best learner and most productive student you can be please:
- Bring the iPad each day to school, fully charged. It's best to get in the habit of charging the iPad at the end of the day each day. That way, you get a full night's charge and will be ready for the start of school the next day. IMPORTANT: Be sure that you are using the charger that came with the iPad, not an iPhone charger. The power requirements are higher for the iPad. Also make sure that you are charging from a wall outlet, not a computer, as the charging time will be much quicker.
- Keep the iPad in its case. The iPad can get dinged, dented or scratched if not properly cared for. Keeping it in the case at all times helps to ensure it stays protected from accidental wear and tear.
- Store the iPad in a safe place when not in use. If you are not using the iPad during a portion of a class, or outside of class, be sure to store it in a safe location. Look for a safe part of the backpack where it won’t get sandwiched by books or other objects that might damage the screen or place the iPad on table/bench (NOT on the ground! Please do not fling backpacks with iPad inside.) If it breaks, students should inform the Tech Department, their advisor, Upper School Division Head, and Upper School Dean of Students immediately in any event of breakage, loss or theft. Repairs cost $299.00. For an incidence of loss, families will be asked to replace the device at the going rate or roughly $800.00. This includes market value of a current comparable current device, a replacement case, and the full suite of MCDS iPad apps. Families will be invoiced by the Business Office and billed according to their student’s rate of tuition.
- Use the iPad for school-related activities. The iPad is intended for educational school-related purposes. Recess and lunch are moments to enjoy a "tech timeout" and connect with friends, exercise and enjoy our beautiful campus. Games (unless sanctioned by your teacher and the Director of Academic Technology) should be saved for home
- Keep electronic communication school related. During classes, electronic communication is to be focused solely on the activity at hand. No non-school related e-communication is allowed. Please check your MCDS email account at least once per day.
- Backup, backup, backup. It is your responsibility to backup data to Google Drive, eBackpack or iCloud regularly.

Here are some basic tips for handling your iPad in the proper manner. You are responsible for the care of your iPad even when off campus.
- Keep it away from liquids, extreme heat, direct sunlight and rain.
- Keep tabs on the whereabouts of your iPad and store safely in your backpack when not using it. Leaving your iPad out-and-about in plain sight may result in someone taking it.
- If you need to clean the screen, use a soft cloth (such as those used for sunglasses) and wipe the screen in a circular motion. Do not use any cleaning liquids.
- Inform the Tech Department of any iPad breakage or performance issues by completing the iPad Repair Request form.
Accessories:
- Otterbox Case (provided by the school in 6th grade)
- USB sync cable and power cord (provided by the school in 6th grade)
- Headphones: It is a good idea to have a set of headphones/earbuds. Headphones are allowed with iPad/laptop use if the website being used is part of an assignment for a class, and if permission has been granted by the teacher. Headphone use for any other purpose is not permitted.
- Keyboards: Most students find that they do not need a physical keyboard; they are often are comfortable typing directly on the iPad's glass. If, however, you would like your own keyboard to keep at home, those below have been popular among students and staff. Keyboards are available on campus in certain classrooms (US English, History, Humanities) should you need to borrow one.
