Questions:1. What types of devices does MCDS have?
Although we are predominantly iPads, we also provide access to a variety of devices (Mac laptops, Chromebooks, etc.) in the LRC and around campus depending on the nature of the task at hand. This exposure to different devices helps students become more adaptable and develop a better understanding of workflow. 2. Will it cost us anything? The cost of the iPad is included in tuition. However, if the iPad is broken or lost, there is a charge to repair or replace the device. 3. What about using the iPad on our home network? Please note that Internet access on the iPads is NOT filtered when off campus. Parents/Guardians may opt to use a monitoring application (e.g. OpenDNS), but ultimately, clarifying home expectations and having frequent conversations about responsible use is best. 4. Will the knowledge my child gains become obsolete as apps morph over time? One of our main goals is to teach students to apply their understanding of technology to a range of devices in order to enhance student's learning. We understand that while devices available today may be obsolete when Lower School students leave MCDS, intellectual flexibility, curiosity, and the ability to transfer understanding from one tool to another are the essential skills. 5. How can I help my child become a responsible user of mobile devices? Please review the MCDS Responsible Use Policy (RUP) together with your child. 6. What if my child breaks the iPad? Students should inform the Tech Department, their advisor, Upper School Division Head, and Upper School Dean of Students immediately in any event of breakage, loss or theft. For each incident of breakage, you will receive a communication from the school and MCDS will bill the family. Repairs cost $299.00. For an incidence of loss, families will be asked to replace the device at the going rate or roughly $800.00. This includes market value of a current comparable current device, a replacement case, and the full suite of MCDS iPad apps. Families will be invoiced by the Business Office and billed according to their student’s rate of tuition. For more details, please review the complete MCDS iPad FAQs document below. |
